A digital lagna patrike

Lagna patrike is the Kannada name for the wedding invitation: the card that carries both families' names, the muhurta and every ceremony, from the nischitartha to the reception.

A digital lagna patrike is the same invitation sent as a link. It reaches the family in Mysuru, Mangaluru and Bengaluru — and the cousins in California — the same evening, and opens on any phone.

Ganjifa is drawn in the style of the round painted playing cards of the old Mysore court, with suits of its own — jasmine, parrot, elephant and mango — and no people or gods on them.

How Ganjifa opens

A painted box of Mysore Ganjifa cards opens to your names; the date is a card your guests draw, and every ceremony is dealt onto green silk as a painted card.

  1. 01

    The box on green silk

A painted card box on green Mysore silk, with the family's name on its lid. Guests slide the lid off, and your names card rises out of the deck.

  2. 02

    The families' words

As guests scroll, the names card turns over to the words of both families.

  3. 03

    Draw a card

A fan of face-down cards: guests draw any one, and it turns over to the date.

  4. 04

    Every ceremony, dealt

The engagement, the haldi, the mehendi, the sangeet, the wedding with its muhurta and the reception — each a round card dealt onto the silk with its time, place and map, the earlier ones gathering into a hand.

  5. 05

    Your photos, dealt

Your photos as round painted cards with their captions, each dealt face down onto the silk and turning over as it lands — tap one to see it large. Before them, the days left beside a spinning Channapatna top; after, good to know under a thambula plate.

  6. 06

    Back into the box

Every wish a card on the table — and at the end the cards go back into the box, and its lid slides shut over your closing words.

Questions families ask

Can we call it the Nischitartha or the Arishina?

Yes. Choose from Engagement, Haldi, Mehendi, Sangeet, Wedding and Reception, rename any of them the way your family says it — Nischitartha, Arishina, Kashi Yatre — or add your own.

Is the invitation in Kannada?

It is written in English, so every guest can read it — family in other states and abroad too — and the names are written in English as well.

Are these real Ganjifa cards?

They are drawn in the style of Mysore Ganjifa — round, painted cards on green silk — with suits made for Invitetale: jasmine, parrot, elephant and mango. There are no people or gods on them.

Can we show the muhurta?

Yes. Give the wedding its time and a note — "The muhurta is at 10:41 am; please be seated by 10:15" — and the day's programme, from the nadaswaram at the gate to lunch on banana leaves.

What does it cost?

Free to make and free to try. ₹1,999 once, when the cards go out to your families.
