Lagna patrike matter

Kannada wedding card wording, in English

Lagna patrike wording to copy — from the groom's family or the bride's, for friends and for WhatsApp — and a line for every ceremony, from the Nischitartha to the Aaratakshate.

A Kannada lagna patrike often opens with the family deity's name — Shri Manjunatha Prasanna, say — then invites guests with the elders' blessings, names the groom (Chi.) and the bride (Chi. Sow.) with their parents, gives the date, the muhurta and the kalyana mantapa, and asks guests to bless the couple with akshate. Six wordings below are ready to copy.

Updated

How a lagna patrike reads, top to bottom

  1. An opening line

Optional. Shri Ganeshaya Namaha — or the family deity's name with Prasanna, "by the grace of": Shri Manjunatha Prasanna, Shri Chamundeshwari Prasanna.

  2. Shubha Vivaha

    The heading: "auspicious wedding".

  3. The invitation

With the blessings of the elders, the family invites you — with your family and friends.

  4. The bride and groom

Chi. before the groom's name and Chi. Sow. before the bride's, with whose son and daughter they are; Smt. and Sri before the parents' names.

  5. The date and the muhurta

The day, the date and the muhurta to the minute. Many cards add the samvatsara, masa and tithi, as the purohit gives them.

  6. The venue

The kalyana mantapa, its area and the city — with a map, if you send it digitally.

  7. The other ceremonies

The Nischitartha, devara karya, arishina, vara pooje and the Aaratakshate — each with its day, time and place.

  8. The request

Come with your family, bless the couple with akshate, and stay for the oota.

  9. The names at the foot

The parents who invite — and often the grandparents and the whole family, awaiting your arrival.

An opening line, if you wish

Many Kannada cards begin with Shri Ganeshaya Namaha, or with the family deity's name and Prasanna — "by the grace of". Every wording below works with any of them, or with none.

    || Shri Ganeshaya Namaha ||

  • To your family deity

Before you print or send

  1. Give the muhurta to the minute

Write it as the purohit gives it — "Muhurta 10:41 am" — with a time to be seated, so nobody walks in after the akshate.

  2. Copy the samvatsara and tithi exactly

Many cards give the Kannada calendar date — the samvatsara, masa and tithi — beside the English one. Take it word for word from the purohit; never work it out yourself.

  3. Check every name with both families

The spellings, the Chi. and Chi. Sow., who is written as Divangata, and whose names go at the foot. Ask the eldest in each family before you send.

  4. Say that lunch follows

After a morning muhurta, "Lunch follows" tells guests to stay on for the oota rather than leave after the akshate.

  5. Give the Aaratakshate its own line

Many guests come only for the reception. Its own day, time, place and map keeps them from arriving at the mantapa in the morning.

A lagna patrike that opens

Ganjifa turns these words into a box of round painted cards on green Mysore silk: each family's name is on its lid, guests draw a card to find the date, and every ceremony, from the Nischitartha to the Aaratakshate, is dealt onto the silk.

Questions families ask

What is written on a Kannada lagna patrike?

From the top: an optional line to Shri Ganesha or the family deity, Shubha Vivaha, the invitation with the elders' blessings, the groom (Chi.) and the bride (Chi. Sow.) with their parents, the date and the muhurta, the kalyana mantapa, the other ceremonies, and the family's names at the foot.

What is the dhaare muhurta?

The moment of the wedding: the bride's parents give her hand, water is poured over the couple's joined hands, and the mangalya is tied. The purohit sets it to the minute, and most cards give its time so guests are seated before it.

How do you write the bride's and groom's names?

Chi. (Chiranjeevi) before the groom's name and Chi. Sow. (Chiranjeevi Soubhagyavathi) before the bride's, with their parents as Sri and Smt. Divangata — or simply "Late" — is for a grandparent who has passed away.

What is the Aaratakshate?

The reception: guests bless the couple with aarati and akshate. Some families hold it on the evening of the wedding, some on the evening before — give it its own time and place on the card.

Can we send the lagna patrike on WhatsApp?

Yes — as a digital lagna patrike. With Invitetale it is a link where a painted box of Ganjifa cards opens to each family's name, with every ceremony, its time, place and a map. Free to try; ₹1,999 once to send.
