Kayal, the backwater
Kayal is the Malayalam word for the backwaters: the still water, the palms that lean over it and the houses along its banks. This invitation spends one wedding day there, from the mist before sunrise to the moon on the water.
It is painted in the manner of the old Kerala oil paintings, with no faces in it. The people in it are your words: both families, your parents and the elders whose blessings you seek.
It plays as guests touch and scroll, on any phone, from a link on WhatsApp. There is no app to install and nothing to download.
How Kayal opens
One day on the Kerala backwaters, dawn to night, in oil paint: guests untie the boat, haul up the fishing net for the date, beat the chenda for each ceremony and set a paper boat afloat with every wish.
- 01
The rope
A country boat is tied to its post in the dawn mist, with each family's name above it. The guest drags the coir rope off the post, and the boat slips free.
- 02
Your names in the morning
The mist lifts as guests scroll, the palms part, and the boat drifts off with your names in the sky.
- 03
The bamboo pole
Each push of the pole makes a ripple and brings in the next of the families' words.
- 04
The fishing net
At noon a Chinese fishing net waits in the water. Guests pull its stones down, the net rises with fish in it, and your date comes up in the sky.
- 05
Behind the shutters
Your story in the sky over a nalukettu's roof, and your photos behind its carved windows. A tap swings the shutters open.
- 06
A beat of the chenda
One forecourt, dressed again for every ceremony. A tap on the drum brings in the mandapam or the reception stage, with the time, place and map.
- 07
The snake boat
At golden hour, the days left in the sky, and guests tap in time to row a long snake boat across the water.
- 08
Paper boats at night
Your closing words under the moon. Every wish sails out on the dark water as a paper boat, for everyone to read.
