Bahaghara card matter

Odia wedding card wording, in English

What to write on your bahaghara card — whole wordings to copy, a line for every ceremony, and each word on the card explained.

An Odia bahaghara card often opens with Jai Jagannath and Shubha Bibaha, begins "Sabinaya nibedana", names the groom and the bride with their parents, gives the date, the shubha lagna and the venue, says when the barajatri sets out, and ends with the Nimantraka. Six wordings below are ready to copy.

How a bahaghara card reads, top to bottom

  1. An opening blessing

Optional. Jai Jagannath — or Shree Ganeshaya Namah — at the very top.

  2. Shubha Bibaha

    The heading: "auspicious wedding".

  3. Sabinaya nibedana

"Humbly submitted" — the way the invitation begins, like a formal letter.

  4. The bride and groom

Chi. before the groom's name and, on many cards, Chi. Sou. before the bride's, with whose son and daughter they are.

  5. The date and the shubha lagna

The day and date, the auspicious time from the panjika, and when the barajatri sets out.

  6. The venue

The kalyan mandap or home, its area and the town — with a map, if you send it digitally.

  7. The other ceremonies

Nirbandha, Mangana, the wedding feast and the Bahu Bhata — each with its day, time and place.

  8. The names at the foot

The Nimantraka who invite, and the Darshanaabhilashi longing to see you.

An opening line, if you wish

Many Odia cards begin with Jai Jagannath, or a line to Shree Ganesh, above Shubha Bibaha; others with Shubha Bibaha alone. Every wording below works either way.

Every word on the card, explained

Bahaghara
The Odia wedding — and the bahaghara card is its invitation, also called the nimantrana patra.
Jai Jagannath
The greeting, and the opening line of many Odia cards.
Mahaprabhu
"The great lord" — how many Odia families speak of Jagannath: "with the blessings of Mahaprabhu".
Shubha Bibaha
"Auspicious wedding" — the heading of most cards.
Sabinaya nibedana
"Humbly submitted" — how a formal Odia letter, and many wedding cards, begin.
Chi. and Chi. Sou.
Chi. (Chiranjibi), "may he live long", before the groom's name; many cards write Chi. Sou. before the bride's.
Sri and Smt.
Mr. and Mrs. On a bahu bhata card after the wedding, the bride is Smt.
Swargiya
"The late", for a grandparent who has passed away.
Shubha lagna
The auspicious time for the wedding, from the panjika.
Panjika
The Odia almanac. Families often add the Odia date from it beside the English one.
Nirbandha
The formal engagement: the two families agree the marriage.
Jwain Anukula
The first wedding rites at the groom's home.
Mangana
The turmeric ceremony, the day before the wedding.
Barajatri
The groom's party, and its procession to the wedding.
Hatha Ganthi
The bride's and groom's hands are joined, and tied, at the wedding.
Bhoji
The feast.
Bahu Bhata
At the groom's home after the wedding, the new bride serves rice to his family — and friends are invited to a feast.
Chauthi
The fourth day after the wedding, kept by many families as a ceremony of its own.
Nimantraka
"Those who invite" — usually the parents.
Darshanaabhilashi
"Longing to see you" — often the elders and close relatives.

Before you print or send

  1. Say when the barajatri sets out

Guests who walk with the groom's party need its time and place, not only the lagna's.

  2. Add the Odia date only as the panjika gives it

Copy the date and the lagna exactly as your family priest writes them — never guess them.

  3. Give the bahu bhata its own card

The groom's family hosts it, often a few days after the wedding and in another town — so it usually has its own card, or at least its own line.

  4. Check every name with both families

The spellings, the titles, and who is named at the foot. Ask the eldest in each family before you print.

  5. Send it early to family outside Odisha

Four to six weeks before — earlier for those coming from other states or abroad.

A bahaghara card that opens

Pattachitra turns these words into an invitation where a palm-leaf bundle unties itself, guests walk in through the Lion Gate and every ceremony paints itself — each family greeted by name.

Questions families ask

What is written on an Odia wedding card?

From the top: an optional Jai Jagannath, Shubha Bibaha, "Sabinaya nibedana", the groom and the bride with their parents, the date and the shubha lagna, the venue, when the barajatri sets out, and the Nimantraka at the foot.

What does Sabinaya nibedana mean?

"Humbly submitted". It is how a formal Odia letter begins — and many bahaghara cards, which are written like a letter from one family to another.

Should the card begin with Jai Jagannath?

Only if your family wishes. Many Odia cards begin with Jai Jagannath or Shree Ganeshaya Namah; others with Shubha Bibaha alone. Every wording here works either way.

What is the bahu bhata?

The reception at the groom's home after the wedding: the new bride serves rice to his family, and friends are invited to a feast. The groom's family sends its own card for it.

Can we send the bahaghara card on WhatsApp?

Yes. With Invitetale it is a link where a palm-leaf bundle unties itself and every ceremony paints itself in Pattachitra, with each family's name, the times, places and a map. Free to try; ₹1,999 once to send.
