Lagna patrika matter

Marathi wedding invitation wording, in English

What to write on your lagna patrika — whole wordings to copy, a line for every ceremony, and each word on the card explained.

A Marathi lagna patrika opens with Shubh Vivah, invites guests with the blessings of the elders, names the groom (Chi.) and the bride (Chi. Sau. Kan.) with their parents, gives the muhurta, date and venue, and ends with the Nimantrak, Swagatotsuk and Darshanabhilashi. Six wordings below are ready to copy.

Updated

How a lagna patrika reads, top to bottom

  1. An opening blessing

Optional. A short line at the very top, often to Shree Ganesh or the family's kuldevata.

  2. Shubh Vivah

    The heading: "auspicious wedding".

  3. The invitation

With the blessings of the elders, the family invites you — and your whole family — to the wedding.

  4. The bride and groom

Chi. before the groom's name, Chi. Sau. Kan. before the bride's, with whose son and daughter they are — and grandchildren, if you wish.

  5. The muhurta

The day, the date and the muhurta. Some families add the tithi from the Hindu calendar, as their priest gives it.

  6. The venue

The hall's name, its area and the city — with a map, if you send it digitally.

  7. The other ceremonies

Sakharpuda, haldi, Seemant Pujan, the reception — each with its day, time and place.

  8. The names at the foot

The Nimantrak who invite, the Swagatotsuk eager to welcome you, and the Darshanabhilashi longing to see you.

  9. A closing line

The meal, and — if you wish — a kind word about gifts.

An opening line, if you wish

Some families begin with a blessing above Shubh Vivah; others don't. Every wording below works either way.

  • To Shree Ganesh

    || Shree Ganeshaya Namah ||

  • Ganesh's blessing

    || Shree Ganesh Prasanna ||

  • The family's kuldevata

    || Shree [Kuldevata] Prasanna ||

  • Without a deity's name

    || Shubh Vivah ||

Every word on the card, explained

Lagna patrika
The wedding invitation card. A digital lagna patrika is the same invitation, sent as a link.
Shubh Vivah
"Auspicious wedding" — the heading of most cards.
Chi. (Chiranjeev)
"May he live long" — written before the groom's name.
Chi. Sau. Kan. (Chiranjeevi Saubhagyakankshini)
Written before the bride's name: may she live long, and have a happy married life.
Shri. and Sau.
Mr. and Mrs. Sau. (Saubhagyavati) is for a married woman — so on a reception card after the wedding, the bride is Sau.
Kai. (Kailasvasi)
"The late", for a grandparent who has passed away: "granddaughter of Kai. Shri. [Ramchandra Kulkarni]".
Shubh muhurta
The auspicious time set for the wedding. A goraj muhurta is an evening one, at dusk.
Sahakutumb sahaparivar
"With your whole family" — as in "please come, sahakutumb sahaparivar".
Antarpaat
The cloth held between the bride and groom while the mangalashtak are sung, lowered at the muhurta.
Mangalashtak
The auspicious verses sung before the muhurta, each ending in "Shubh Mangal Savdhan".
Akshata
Grains of rice the guests throw to bless the couple when the antarpaat comes down.
Nimantrak
"Those who invite" — usually the parents.
Swagatotsuk
"Eager to welcome you" — often the brothers, sisters and cousins.
Darshanabhilashi
"Longing to see you" — often the elders and close relatives.
Aaher
Gifts given at a wedding. "No aaher, please" asks guests not to bring any.
Mangal karyalay
A wedding hall.
Bhojan
The meal, usually lunch after a morning muhurta.

Before you print or send

  1. Check every name with both families

The spellings, the titles and who is listed at the foot. Elders read a lagna patrika closely — a missing uncle is noticed before the date is.

  2. Give the muhurta, and when to arrive

Guests come for the akshata, so write the muhurta and a time to be seated: "Muhurta 11:34 am — please be seated by 11:00 am".

  3. Add the tithi only as your priest gives it

Many families write the Hindu calendar date beside the English one. Copy it exactly as the family priest writes it — never guess it.

  4. Keep the card itself short

The wedding goes on the card; the haldi, Seemant Pujan and reception can each have a line, or a page of their own.

  5. Say "no gifts" kindly

"Your blessings are our gift — no aaher, please" is clear and warm. Leave it out if your family expects aaher.

Questions families ask

What is written on a Marathi lagna patrika?

From the top: an optional blessing, Shubh Vivah, the invitation with the elders' blessings, the groom (Chi.) and the bride (Chi. Sau. Kan.) with their parents' names, the muhurta and date, the venue, the other ceremonies, and the Nimantrak, Swagatotsuk and Darshanabhilashi at the foot — with the meal at the end.

How do you write the bride's and groom's names?

Chi. before the groom's name and Chi. Sau. Kan. before the bride's, with their parents as Shri. and Sau. On a reception card after the wedding, the bride is Sau.

What do Swagatotsuk and Darshanabhilashi mean?

Swagatotsuk means "eager to welcome you" — often the brothers, sisters and cousins. Darshanabhilashi means "longing to see you" — often the elders and close relatives. Both are lists of names at the foot of the card, under the Nimantrak who invite.

Should the opening line be to Shree Ganesh?

Only if your family wishes. Many cards begin with "|| Shree Ganeshaya Namah ||" or their kuldevata's name; others begin with "Shubh Vivah" alone. Every wording here works either way.

Can we send the lagna patrika on WhatsApp?

Yes — as a digital lagna patrika. With Invitetale it is a link that opens with each family's name, in Paithani silk, with every ceremony, its time, place and a map. Free to try; ₹1,999 once to send.
