What to write on your wedding card — whole wordings to copy, a line for every ceremony, and each word on the card explained.

A Kashmiri wedding card often opens with Shri Ganeshaya Namah, invites guests with the blessings of the elders, names the groom (Chi.) and the bride (Sau. Kan.) with their parents, gives the date, the lagan and the venue, lists the maenziraat and the evenings of wanvun, and ends with the family's names. Six wordings below are ready to copy.

Before you print or send

  1. Give the lagan, and how to get there

Family flies in from Jammu, Delhi and abroad. Give the lagan's time, the venue's map, and where they can stay.

  2. Put the wanvun evenings on the card

Relatives who come early want to join the singing — say which evenings, and where.

  3. Take the lagan only from your family priest

Copy the time exactly as it is given — never guess it.

  4. Check every name with both families

The spellings, the titles, and who is named at the foot. Ask the eldest in each family before you print.

  5. Send it early to family who travel

Six weeks before at least — flights to Srinagar fill up in the wedding season.

Questions families ask

What is written on a Kashmiri wedding card?

Often: an optional Shri Ganeshaya Namah, Shubh Vivah, the groom (Chi.) and the bride (Sau. Kan.) with their parents, the date and the lagan, the venue, the maenziraat and the evenings of wanvun, and the family's names at the foot.

What are the wanvun and the maenziraat?

The wanvun are the evenings when the women of the family sing the wedding songs; the maenziraat is the night of mehendi before the wedding. Many cards list both, so relatives know when to come.

What is the posh puza?

At the end of the wedding, the couple sit under a cloth while the family showers them with flowers and blessings. It follows the lagan, so the card can say "the posh puza follows".

Should the card begin with Om Namah Shivaya?

Only if your family wishes. Many cards begin with Shri Ganeshaya Namah or Om Namah Shivaya; others with Shubh Vivah alone. Every wording here works either way.

Can we send the wedding card on WhatsApp?

Yes. With Invitetale it is a link where a gust sweeps the chinar leaves off Dal Lake and guests travel across Kashmir as they scroll, with each family's name, the lagan and every ceremony's map. Free to try; ₹1,999 once to send.
