Biyer card matter
Bengali wedding card wording, in English
What to write on your biyer card — whole wordings to copy, a line for every ceremony, and each word on the card explained.
A Bengali biyer card often opens with Sri Sri Prajapataye Namah and Shubho Bibaho, begins "Sabinoy nibedon", names the bride (Kalyaniya) and the groom (Sriman) with their parents, gives the date, the lagna and the venue, and ends with the Nibedok. Six wordings below are ready to copy.
Updated
How a biyer card reads, top to bottom
An opening blessing
Optional. Sri Sri Prajapataye Namah — often with a butterfly drawn beside it.
Shubho Bibaho
The heading: "auspicious wedding".
Sabinoy nibedon
"Humbly submitted" — the way the invitation begins, like a formal letter.
The bride and groom
Kalyaniya before the bride's name, Sriman before the groom's, with whose daughter and son they are.
The date and the lagna
The day and date — and the Bengali date from the panjika, if you wish — with the time of the lagna.
The venue
The name of the house or hall, its area and the city — with a map, if you send it digitally.
The other ceremonies
Ashirbad, aiburobhat, gaye holud and the bou bhaat — each with its day, time and place.
Nibedok
The names of those inviting, at the foot.
An opening line, if you wish
Many biyer cards begin with a line to Prajapati, often beside a butterfly; others begin with Shubho Bibaho alone. Every wording below works either way.

- Sri Sri Prajapataye Namah
- A salutation to Prajapati, the creator, who blesses marriages. The butterfly on many cards shares his name: prajapati.

- Swargiya

- Lagna
- The auspicious time for the wedding, from the panjika.

Before you print or send
Use the bhalo naam on the card
The formal name goes on the card; the daak naam everyone calls them by belongs in your WhatsApp message.
Give the lagna, and when to arrive
Guests come for the shubho drishti, so write the lagna and a time to be seated: "Lagna 9:12 pm — please be seated by 8:45 pm".
Add the Bengali date only as the panjika gives it
Copy it exactly as your purohit writes it — never guess it.
Send the bou bhaat its own card
The groom's family hosts it, two days after the wedding — so it usually has its own card, or at least its own line.
Check every name with both families
The spellings, the titles, and who is named at the foot. Ask the eldest in each family before you print.
A biyer card that opens
Rajbari turns these words into an invitation where two betel leaves are lowered to show your names, and guests walk through an old Kolkata rajbari — every ceremony with its time and place, and each family greeted by name.

Questions families ask
What is written on a Bengali wedding card?
From the top: an optional Sri Sri Prajapataye Namah, Shubho Bibaho, "Sabinoy nibedon", the bride (Kalyaniya) and the groom (Sriman) with their parents, the date and the lagna, the venue, and the Nibedok's names at the foot.
How do you write the bride's and groom's names?
Kalyaniya before the bride's name and Sriman before the groom's, using their bhalo naam, with their parents as Sri and Smt. On a bou bhaat card after the wedding, the bride is Smt.
What does Sabinoy nibedon mean?
"Humbly submitted". It is how a formal Bengali letter begins — and many biyer cards, which are written like a letter from one family to another.
What is the bou bhaat?
The reception at the groom's home, usually two days after the wedding: the bride serves rice to his family, and friends are invited to a feast. The groom's family sends its own card for it.
Can we send the biyer card on WhatsApp?
Yes. With Invitetale it is a link that opens with each family's name behind two betel leaves, with every ceremony, its time, place and a map. Free to try; ₹1,999 once to send.
